We invite you to embark on a journey tracing your family’s history. The Thayer Families Association was founded in 1991 and is the result of many dedicated Thayers as well as non-Thayers. Publication of a definitive, comprehensive Thayer genealogy was a stated goal of the TFA founders so that anyone could learn about their ancestry and the history of this truly remarkable surname. This enormous project is well underway with the publication of Volume VII – Descendants of Thomas Thayer, Immigrant to America 1637, Through his Grandson Isaac and First Wife Mercy Rockwood (click this link for more info & an order form). Everyone in the Thayer Families Association welcomes you to the wonderful opportunity to meet your cousins! There is an enormous amount of information here and available through the TFA. Please browse through our site and feel free to contact us if you would like any further information. NOTE: When e-mailing, please mention you saw our site, thanks.

So much great information here. There is a lot of confusing information about the Thayer history. I'm grateful that there's so much attention put to correcting that. I noticed that on here you have Mary Wheelock married to Ebenezer, son of Ebenezer and Mary (Thomson) Thayer. I've always had her a married to the son of Isaac and Mercy Thayer. Have I had it wrong all these years?

Oddly enough, my DNA profile is a high degree of match to a known Benson ancestor and I noticed the given name of Benson in your ancestor line , any idea of the origin of that name?

Neither of my cousins were able to tell me anything, and they are the only Thayer cousins I am aware of with any interest in our genealogy. I was quite surprised to find that I have the greatest store of photos and family lore about my father, his two older brothers and sister. All of them have passed and we were never a close family, so I am surprised that anyone would have had information regarding my mother. I would appreciate any information about how information is obtained and what type of verification process occurs prior to publication.

Although the subject is identified as Lucien Thayer, I believe it may be one of his three brothers -- all four boys died as a result of the war -- two were killed in action and two died of disease contracted during their service. I suspect this fellow may be Loring W. Thayer who enlisted on April 16, 1861, joined the 4th Mass. Infantry, then the 32nd Mass Volunteers. He was killed in Virginia in September of 1864. The reason I say this is that the clear glass ambrotypes pretty much fell out of favor by about 1862 and the other three boys enlisted later: Charles S. on 2/15/1864, George F. on 4/3/1863, and Lucien M. on 7/12/1864. If anyone would like to see their possible relative, I'd be happy to e-mail you an 800-dpi scan of my ambrotype. I'll just need your e-mail. Take care, Dan Binder in Illinois.

If I have a scatter plot of everyone of my 1200 Family Finder matches and could resort them all to each other and cosort their particular surname lists- ooh ooh wow. If everyone would use the double state CACA(Not a joke) NYNY, OHOH, AKAK etc.. style we could search for states lists but most queries want at least 3+ letters and at that point you mix names with states, trust me Virginia can be a first name. But no females are VAVA unless you add voom. Some use MD for Maryland, darn doctors; which can't be searched for. If a Genealogy Program could search via query and sort like a spread sheet or robust relational DB. PAF would have totally extinct by now and been the DODO bird (DODO is not a state yet!) but alas, the build it and they will come programmer has not heard the call. In the interest of 'myself' and the world- I want to fill out my first 6 generations before I die- A task that still has not been possible for >40 years and some only to 3 levels. I say the dam is getting too full of using outmoded programs (QWERTY anyone). And we should realize that 6000 choices on a defined search on Ancestry is a Joke. And lastly our TV commercials are still way too loud, but we still hit the vol control don't we. Thanks for your patience. I will do further sleuthing re Gramps- I did say free. No I am independent as they come. I am a cinema doc inspired person; truth, facts, and results are required.

Hi Talice. Well, the only trouble with that theory is that by the time the Civil War rolled around, the Thayers had already been in the states for more than two hundred years. With that amount of time to procreate, you can image the numbers!! The two brothers you hear about are Thomas (Immigrant in 1637) and Richard (Immigrant in 1641). Both of them pretty much hung around the community they helped found, Braintree, Mass. until their deaths. I am a direct descendant of Richard .... and I'm in Canada! We get around.

Dear Robert Wood, Thank you for contacting me regarding the correct parentage for Lucy Thayer. In studying what you have listed above, I do find some errors and some differences in information. Here is Lucy Thayer correct lineage to the immigrant Ancestor, Thomas Thayer, who was born 1596 in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England; Immigrated to America in 1637 and settled in Braintree, Norfolk, MA where he died in 1665: Lucy 4 ( Jonathan 6, Cornelius 5, Jonathan 4, Josiah 3, Ferdinando 2, Thomas 1) THAYER and Martha SMITH. There are three more generations of Lucy Thayer's ancestors back in England, to the year 1500! I have sent some additional information to you in a private E-mail message. I hope this is helpful to you, Sincerely, Patricia

Both grew up in a small city outside of Rochester, NY called Brockport on West Sweden Road. My great grandfather was Elmer Thayer...his wife (my great grandmother Catherine Murphy Thayer). I have always been interested in genealogy ever since I was a youg boy. Well, over this past Christmas break I decided to do a little research. I contacted a fellow Thayer, Marc Thayer III whom I saw has been doing some research. I told him I had not been able to go as far back as a great great (however many times grandfather George W. Thayer) with records shown that he was born in 1805 in Merrimack, NH. I emailed Marc thinking I would never hear from him. Lo and behold I received a Christmas gift this past Christmas as I saw myself staring at the names of my great great 13x grandfathers...I never knew my granfadthers have been in the U.S. for so long! I was staring at names back to the 1600s! I thought I might be in a dream. I knew my great great..howver many times great grandfathers sons was in the Civil War (Volney P Thayer). Mea Culpa, Volney, for me living in Manassas, VA! Ha. Even more interesting, my (however many times great grandfathers, Joseph Thayer, Son of Isaac Thayer) fought for the American side in the Revolutionary War! I almost fell out of my seat because I absolutely love American history, and always told myself that if there would ever be a time would love to go back to in history it would be before the time and during the revolutionary war. It's directly in my blood! A direct link! Even more cool was my (however many times great grandfather Isaac Thayer) was a founder of Mendon, MA. I have never heard of the town, but great knowing that an ancestor, and not just an ancestor , but a great grandfather (however many times) was one of the founders. Plus on top of this is the biggie...now I know where my ancestors come from in England! My again, however many times (great grandfathers Ferdinando Thayer..how does a Thayer get a name like Ferdinando?!?!...when I saw that i was confused...say what?!? Ha. Nonetheless, it is a cool name. Some kind of Spanish influence somewhere? Anyways now I know my direct descendants came from Gloucestershire, England, and have been here for a really really long time. And I'm grateful for them, and for my history...Our history! Hello fellow Thayer's!
